Workplace Stress and Management

ree

Workspace stress is a growing issue across the globe. With jobs becoming more technical and mental labor-based, individuals become prone to stress and breakdown which may affect their performance and that of the the company in the long term.

Workspace stress can arise due to different reasons and factors. Overwhelming tasks, heavy workloads, tight deadlines, and conflicts within the organization may also lead to stress. Thus, it is important to prioritize strategies that help reduce stress and build an effective and comforting environment.

One of the most important strategies that should be adopted by managers is to ensure that the workload is fairly and equally divided among employees. This ensures that the burden of work is not given entirely to one person which may create stress in that individual and affect their performance. Division of work will allow the burden to be divided and individuals could focus more on the tasks assigned to them, thus reducing their stress and increasing their performance.

Employers should understand and respect the fact that employees have a lot on their plate, scheduling unnecessary meetings for tiny information that could have been communicated digitally or failing to micromanage things themselves and then calling out employees not responsible for it, is agreed to be more upsetting and less motivating for employees.

Workshops and regular counseling can also help reduce stress and increase productivity. Spaces for deep work and respecting an employee’s leave and allowing them to respect is always appreciated. Effective communication and understanding always goes a long way.

Creating an open environment where an individual can express their opinions, feel included, and are provided for their needs is important to reduce stress.

Companies should strive to create an environment of trust and respect, where employees feel supported and valued. They should also provide access to mental health services and offer stress management programs. Additionally, employers should ensure that employees have access to flexible working hours and a healthy work-life balance because if they are completing their working hours, they should be allowed to take their personal hours as well without fail.

Thus, there is a need for employers to recognize that workplace stress is a significant problem, and it is necessary to come up with effective strategies to deal with it. Stress in the workplace affects not only the individual employee but also the company as a whole in a negative way. Written by Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson, the book ‘It Shouldn’t be Crazy at the Workplace’ creates a dilemma for us readers to think about why most employees prefer to work in cafes or libraries instead of their workplace. I feel that the workplace environment is mentally draining for them and that they don’t feel productive. They feel better, focused, and motivated to work in slow music rather than working in the hustle-bustle of their office. What do you think, why is it so?

The current work trend calls for a time for the employees to physically and mentally de-stress themselves to feel productive and produce quality work. This adds to the fact that overworked employees should not be seen and treated as a benchmark for other employees to achieve, rather leaves and rest periods should be introduced and respected. This means that it is the institution's responsibility to maintain an environment that will foster a sense of well-being amongst employees and make sure that it provides it.

By implementing these strategies, companies can mitigate workspace stress, thereby enhancing employee well-being and productivity. Ultimately, fostering a supportive environment where individuals feel valued and heard is crucial for not only the success of the employees but also for the long-term success of the organization as a whole. In prioritizing mental health and stress management, companies not only fulfill their ethical obligations but also invest in a more sustainable and resilient workforce, needed to travel on the road of success in an increasingly competitive global market.
